Andrew Merrick Glass

Andrew Merrick moved to Asheville, North Carolina from Kansas in 1992 to begin work as an assistant to Rick Eckerd, who by this time was a
rising star of an already large glass community located in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Andrew says, "I had a basic set of skills honed under the watchful eyes of Will Dexter, Dudley Giberson, and Richard Ritter (teachers of intensive glass workshops at the Penland School of Craft in the early nineties), but needed instruction in the everyday operation of a working glass studio. I learned a lot from Rick and was especially impressed by his ability to produce many different styles and forms of glass all at the same time."
Early memories of the awesome power of fire were formed in Andrew's mind after witnessing the seasonal burning of the tall grass prairie in Kansas to promote good grazing for cattle

These days Andrew, together with his wife Jenny Kallista (who moved to Asheville with a degree from the University of Illinois and a hunger for hot glass) produce functional and colorful blown glass in a studio known as Great Southern Glassworks which was begun in 1995 along with Roddy Capers and Nick Kekic who were old Penland buddies.

" I am proud of this shop and the level of craftsmanship that comes out of here," Andrew says. "Most of all I'm proud of my ability to offer a variety of designs simultaneously within my ongoing body of work." Many corporations agree with Andrew, as Blue Cross/Blue Shield, Wachovia Bank, and the Marriott, Omni, and Westin Hotels all have Andrew's work in their collections. His work is also carried in galleries all over the Southeast (complete listing on request) and has become a favorite amongst the interior design set. "Just don't ask me to match the color of anyone's couch," he says with a grin.

What does the future hold? "Hopefully a bigger facility that will include a dedicated steel and woodworking space, and more time for Jenny to further her exploration into glass. She's really good, and ready to step up to the big leagues." Andrew and Jenny also make custom steel and wood furniture. Jenny adds, "Working together is so rewarding, and I'm very proud to say that my husband is a huge inspiration to me. My work has evolved in leaps and bounds since I began working with Andy, and I can only expect it to get better."
